Bigger and Better – Artspace 50/50

What I love about the Artspace 50/50 annual fundraiser is the chance to see contemporary artwork by Peterborough artists I didn’t know about. Some of these artists show infrequently or out of town, and some are new to the community. With over 175 works by 68 artists, Director Fynn Leitch says this year’s show has more contributing artists than ever before, and that the work is the highest caliber she has seen to date.

The show is briefly on display until April 13th at Artspace; the gala takes place on April 14th when all the work will fly away, so see it while you can or better yet, get your ticket and take some original art home.

Photography is solidly represented  this year. Roz Hermant’s trios of small, subtle, tonally related images convey mood and movement. Micky Renders makes a bolder statement with a moving camera, turning night photography into sumptuous abstracts. I’m touched by Onyx Dryadia’s 3 works, textures in greyscale.

An acrylic on paper by Victoria Ward depicts snow melting on a spring landscape with fresh colour and line. Pastel lends itself beautifully to imaginary landscapes by Caroline deMooy. Joe Stable’s black and white abstracts don’t mince words. There are several John Climenhage’s to choose from – clouds done with an assured hand. (You can read more about his studio and classes here »)

There are some small sculptural works – Dale Brownson’s wire creatures, clear acrylic objects from Sam Mogelonsky, organic metallics from Carolyn Code and Beth McCubbin’s eccentric ceramics.

I’m happy to see increasing interest in printmaking – this show includes woodcuts from Peter Barron, lithography from Marianne Collins, and intaglio from George Raab.

Come for the art, stay for the party! Along with the Annual Art Draw, there will be more art available in the silent auction, great food, live entertainment, and the awaited return of the Balloon Prizes!
